An oldie but a goodie
Jun. 19th, 2008 05:00 pm"The reason I put everyone here naked ... I wasn't trying to be cute. It's just that with clothes there's right away pockets, and pockets, you gotta put something in 'em."
- George Burns as God in Oh, God!
While we're on the topic of pants: I was thinking recently about women's pants. And not just what's in women's pants, but the pants themselves. Most women's pants don't have pockets. And just forget about trying to find pockets on a skirt. Sure, some women's jeans and shorts have pockets, but the garments are often worn so snugly that you could not squeeze a Tic-Tac in there; they might as well be sprayed-on.
Why is this? Is it because the fashion industry assumes that women carry a bag or a purse, and therefore have no need to pocket their many personal items? Or do you think it's part of a more entrenched philosophy, wherein the male-dominated textile industry withholds pockets to symbolically disposess women of their goods and therefore oppress them? Or perhaps it is a testament to women as the more enlightened sex, with their preference for emotional connections rather than material possessions, implying that all we really need to hold close to us is our love for one another.
Or maybe it just helps to make women's thighs look slimmer.
