Covering all the bases
Apr. 13th, 2007 11:14 amAs a postscript to my tale of allergy-inspired woe, I noticed something interesting about my new medication.
I've been prescribed 120mg of Zyrtec-D, to be taken twice a day. Listed among the possible side effects are:
Drowsiness; Difficulty falling asleep; Dizziness; Sleepiness; Dry mouth, Headache; Dry throat; Unusual tiredness or weakness; Nausea; Anxiety.
Basically, Zyrtec manufacturer Pfizer has no idea whether this pill is going to keep me awake or put me to sleep. Maybe it will put me into one of those nebulous states of pre-sleep where you're just about to fall asleep but then your body shakes you awake because it thinks you are dying. I do not want to take a pill that makes my body think it is dying. But I suppose it is better than waking up sneezing at three in the morning, which definitely has some irritating side effects.
All this talk about side effects makes me think of the hilarious essay Side Effects, published in the New Yorker on this date in 1998.
