penfieldJ. left on a jet plane today, bound for a work-related junket in New Orleans.
I briefly entertained thoughts of accompanying her, but since I'm already taking time off for a trip to Seattle next week, I can't really afford to skip town a full week and a half before Memorial Day, especially since certain lawmakers seem bound and determined to ruin my good spirits by then.
(New Orleans is not only my favorite American City, with its food and fests and second-lining, but it also happens to be the place where J. and I ostensibly became a "couple" just over three years ago. Thank you, ERD, James Taylor and Pat O'Brien.)
Until J. gets back on Sunday evening, I have been conferred Provisional Bachelor Status. This does not entail womanizing[*] in any fashion; I remain monogamously committed to my girlfriend, and in any case there was not exactly a whole lot of womanizing going on even when I was a full-fledged card-carrying bachelor. In this instance, Provisional Bachelor Status merely grants me license to lie around in my underwear, eat Froot Loops for dinner, leave the toilet seat up, sleep starfish-style in the bed and watch so much televised baseball that I inadvertently memorize Cristian Guzman's on-base percentage.
Of course, I will miss my girlfriend. Not only is she a source of joy and beauty, but she has become an essential part of my everyday routine. I may have to take a deep whiff of her pajamas before I go to sleep tonight.
But it will also be strange because for the first six months of cohabitation, I had to un-learn all of my solipsistic tendencies and remember how to coexist with another person. Now that I've been house-trained, will I be able to indulge myself without feeling like she could walk in the door at any moment? Will my gluttony come with a side of guilt?
Given that she'll be spending the next five days in gluttony's capital city, I'm going to try not to feel too bad about it.
