Now that I am living with my girlfriend, to whom I have been monogamously devoted for more than two years now, I am sometimes confronted by an issue that I have difficulty addressing with any sort of delicacy: Is it okay to fart in the presence of a loved one? How much intimacy is too much intimacy?

It's now a matter of courtesy. You should still try to hold it in and go to the bathroom to fart. What changes, I think, is that you have now (hopefully) let your guard down and can fart without seeing it coming.

During the height of the courtship phase, one is so worried about doing something wrong that one is constantly on guard for screw-ups like farting publicly. Once you've spent enough time together, you're not constantly thinking about stuff like that or whether there's something in your teeth, or if your breath stinks. You're totally relaxed, and ready to toot.

Why would one ever intentionally fart in a room with other people in it?

Most people older than 18 don't TRY to fart with other people in t the room, it just happens. After a while (and 2 year is certainlyt"a while" ) you should be able to "oops toot" without fear of scaring off one's mate.
