This morning on a crowded Metro car, a guy was wearing one of those orange rubber bracelets that are so popular these days. It had the Stoli logo on it and said "BE REAL."

It's hard for me to imagine anything less authentic than wearing rubber jewelry in a blithly desperate attempt to self-identify as the member of some pre-established social group -- especially a bracelet that has to remind you loudly to "be real." And that's not even mentioning the hypocrisy inherent in such a bracelet being provided by a company whose products are designed to alter users' personality on a temporary-to-ongoing basis.

What would have been "real" is if the bracelet had simply said "douchebag."

Maybe he was being ironic?

Oh course, irony was only cool between 1995 and 2003, so he's lame if he's going for irony.

Haven't those stupid rubber bracelets been used to identify yourself with a cause? The trend originated with Lance Armstrong's cancer foundation "Be Strong". For every dollar you gave to the cause, you got a yellow bracelet. Then it was pink for breast cancer research. Blue for prostate cancer cures. Red for Hurrican Katrina relief. Green for Oscar the Grouch Abuse awareness.

What cause, exactly, is someone supporting if they are wearing a bracelet branded with a "Stoli" logo? Alcoholics Anonymous? Mothers Against Drunk Driving? Idiots who shouldn't be allowed to wear bracelets?
