O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

I am not sure that "Jarlsburg" is a brand of swiss--I think that it is a different kind of cheese altogether (although it does taste similar to Swiss).

mmmm, Jarlsburg...

You may be right, but the people at my local Harris Teeter list it as "Jarlsberg Swiss."

Wikipedia entry for Jarlsberg lists it as "a mild Swiss-style cheese." Perhaps Harris Teeter is just making sure we know what to expect if they buy Jarlsberg.

But what happened to your entry for favorite toothpaste?

Apparently Aim is still on the market. I was sure it was discontinued. It always used to be my favorite toothpaste, but since I haven't used it in years, it may taste totally different now. Therefore I am uncomfortable calling it my "favorite." I'll have to try it again when I run out of Colgate.

woodwind instrument

I'm surprised the the clarinet is your favorite woodwind instrument simply because it can so easily be played so wrong and sound so aweful. I imagine you like it when it is played properly but it is one of the harder of woodwind instruments to play. Not as hard as the Oboe or Bassoon, but definatly harder then flute or saxaphone. It can be aweful to hear especially when listening to a bunch of elementary students playing it. I don't remember you playing any instruments but I could be wrong. All this coming from a trumpet player, what do I know?

Once upon a time, I played the trombone -- poorly. It probably would have sounded better if I had filled it with rocks.

When I think about the clarinet, I think about Benny Goodman, and "Sweet Georgia Brown," and dixieland music.

But it's okay to be a trumpet player. The first step is admitting you have a problem.

You are poo-pooing the flute with a "it's so easy" and as a flute-player, I can tell you it is not as easy as you think, especially as you get more advanced. The instrument that I played in middle school is different from those played by soloists or in orchestras--those have more keys, and most keys are "open" with a hole in the middle of the key so that your finger is what controls the pitch of the note.

I always wanted to play the french horn.

Your informed comments are well-taken, Smithie. But if the anonymous poster is who I think she is, then she a music teacher to whose knowledge I am obliged to defer.

Eveyone knows that trumpet players were the coolest. We could let out a "charge" at any time. That's how you knew how cool we were.

I didn't mean to infer that playing flute is a piece of cake by any means. I just thought it was easier then clarinet, though you are right in saying that it gets a lot tougher the more advanced you get. I have tried playing both instruments as well as many others and I personally had an easier time with the flute. And though I learned other instruments because I went to school to be a music teacher, I never did finish that goal but hope to in the future. My husband is the music teacher for now! Thanks all for replying!
